What is a Superyacht?

Within the charter and brokerage industry, the language has evolved with the growth of yacht sizes. The term ‘superyacht’ typically refers to a luxury vessel over 24 metres (around 80 feet) in length. However, most brokers today would typically reserve the term for yachts of around 40–50 metres and above, as these vessels offer the scale, facilities and crew structure expected of modern luxury superyacht charters.

Larger yachts, often 60 metres and above, are sometimes referred to as megayachts, though this term is more informal and mainly used to highlight the very largest vessels in the global fleet.

A superyacht charter usually features professional crew, multiple guest cabins, expansive deck spaces and elevated amenities such as Jacuzzis, private chefs, and curated water toy collections. The size of the superyacht you charter plays a defining role in the privacy and comfort levels you receive on board.

Why Choose a Superyacht Charter Over a Standard Yacht?

As experience-led luxury travel continues to grow, demand for high-end charters is increasingly outpacing standard yacht hire. Ultra high net worth travellers want more in terms of scale, luxury, service, and exclusivity.

From expansive master suites and multiple entertainment decks to spa facilities, beach clubs, and extensive water toy garages, superyachts are designed for immersion rather than simple cruising.

While large yachts for charter can provide comfort and style, a private superyacht charter elevates every detail, from bespoke itineraries to Michelin-level dining and discreet, anticipatory service.

At 212 Yachts, we’ll guide you through these distinctions, explaining the differences in superyacht size, onboard experiences, and superyacht charter costs. If you’re planning to charter a superyacht, call our experts today.

Who is a Superyacht Charter Best Suited For?

A superyacht charter appeals to a new generation of experience-driven HNWIs and multi-generational families seeking privacy, space, luxury, and customised travel experiences.

With the average age of luxury charter clients decreasing, drawn by experiential luxury over traditional hotel-based holidays, a superyacht holiday is ideal for celebrations, reunions, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and bespoke itineraries alike.

With a generous superyacht size, there are multiple guest suites and expansive social areas. These vessels also feature professional crews capable of delivering tailored service and seamless hospitality.

The Mediterranean

Regarded as the quintessential superyacht charter destination, the Mediterranean combines stunning coastlines, historic ports and world-class gastronomy with ideal summer cruising conditions.

From the glamour of the French Riviera and Côte d’Azur to the historic harbours of Italy, Greece, Spain, and Croatia’s Adriatic seaboard, this region remains the heartbeat of the charter calendar.

Croatia and the Adriatic

Croatia’s Dalmatian coast has surged in popularity thanks to its crystal waters and medieval towns like Dubrovnik and Hvar’s stunning anchorages. The Adriatic also offers a variety of secluded bays, charming islands, hidden beaches, and cultural experiences perfect for multi-stop superyacht vacations.

The Caribbean

For winter and tropical voyages, the Caribbean’s turquoise waters and white-sand beaches are unrivalled. Popular spots include the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, St Barts, and Antigua, each offering distinctive styles of luxury and adventure.

Asia-Pacific

South-East Asia and the South Pacific are emerging as captivating superyacht charter regions. From Thailand’s serene bays to the coral atolls of the Maldives and the remote beauty of the Pacific islands, these destinations offer a glimpse into exotic cultures while surrounded by pristine marine landscapes.

Superyacht Charter Seasons & Best Time to Go

Timing is an essential element of any exceptional superyacht holiday. The Mediterranean’s classic season runs from May through October, with long sunny days and calm seas.

June to August is the peak choice for those seeking warm weather and lively destinations. Alternatively, shoulder months like May, September, and early October offer wonderfully warm conditions, quieter anchorages, fewer crowds, and better availability across popular ports.

In contrast, the Caribbean’s prime season spans December to April, when steady trade winds and tropical sunshine create perfect cruising conditions and ideal island-hopping opportunities.

During shoulder periods in May and June, the weather is excellent and crowds are lighter, while mid-summer through early autumn coincides with hurricane season, which many guests prefer to avoid.

Other regions follow their own rhythms. For instance, Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean shine in the northern winter months, with November to April often considered the best time to explore these exotic cruising grounds.

At 212 Yachts, we can tailor every itinerary to seasonal conditions and your priorities, whether you’d like to charter a superyacht during peak season or a quieter, shoulder season.

If you’re hoping for secluded anchorages, Michelin-starred dining ashore, historic port visits, or adrenaline-fuelled water sports, your itinerary is curated with precision. We’ll handle every detail, from arrival logistics and cultural experiences to preferred chefs, wellness elements, and event planning aboard.

Our team will create a comprehensive charter plan and anticipate every element of the experience before you even step on board.

Why Use a Superyacht Broker Instead of Booking Directly

Booking a superyacht directly may seem straightforward, but it rarely offers the level of choice and bespoke service that you might expect.

On the other hand, superyacht charter brokers, like our team in Antibes, act as trusted intermediaries with deep industry networks. We’ll give you access to an exclusive inventory, including many of the finest vessels not publicly listed, to ensure your charter is truly tailored to your needs.

Our charter brokers will navigate complex contracts, negotiate favourable terms, verify vessels and crew credentials, and anticipate logistical needs well before you step aboard. This expertise is what results in a seamless, highly personalised luxury superyacht charter.

The Cost of a Superyacht Charter

When it comes to understanding superyacht charter costs, remember that no two charters are the same. Rates vary widely based on yacht size, age, season, destination and onboard amenities, all of which shape the base charter fee.

Smaller superyachts might begin in the lower tens of thousands per week, while larger luxury vessels often command hundreds of thousands to over €1 million per week, depending on specifications and exclusivity.

At 212 Yachts, our most recent listings show that:

  • Yachts around 36-52m often start from roughly €115,000-€155,000 per week starting prices
  • Larger or newer builds can cost €680,000+, €800,000+ or more per week
  • Exclusive vessels like 115m Lürssen charters, like superyacht yacht KISMET costs from €3 million (when booked through 212 Yachts)

What Affects the Cost

Yacht length, builder and features: Larger superyacht sizes and premium amenities, everything from swimming pools, full spas, helicopters increase the base rate.

Season and destination: Peak Mediterranean or Caribbean windows command higher rates.

Crew expertise: Highly experienced crews elevate service and cost.

APA, Fees, and Additional Costs
Most charters also include an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), typically 25-35% of the base charter fee, to cover fuel, food & beverages, docking, taxes, and other operational costs.

Any unused APA is returned after the trip. Crew gratuity (commonly 15-20% at discretion to the charterer) and local taxes are additional.

For precise figures tailored to your travel dates, guest details, and preferences, we’ll provide bespoke cost breakdowns and transparent guidance prior to booking.
